When you think of the best places to enjoy really good food, Boston, Seattle, Portland, New Orleans and Washington DC probably jump to the top of your head.  However, a visit to the GastroFest and you just may add Jacksonville to that list.

Everything at the Jacksonville GastroFest 2015 is locally sourced: the food, the restaurants, the beverage companies and even the authors!  Start out the day with a little knowledge, courtesy of TedEd’s Educational Shorts.  You’ll learn about the science behind how your food is made.  Jacksonville authors Jeffrey Spear (“The First Coast Heritage Cookbook” and owner of Studio Spear) and Chef Dennis Chan (owner of the Blue Bamboo) will be on-site to sign their cookbooks.  Watch a cooking demo from 13 Gypsies Chef Howard Kirk, Jeffrey Spear, Southern Passion Spices Chef Amadeus (winner of the Food Network’s Extreme Mexican Showdown), Top Indian Chef winner and Fusion Food Truck Chef Ashley Amin or Conscious Eats Executive Director Florence Haridan.

The entire day is jam-packed with foodie delights.  Learn about bee keeping.  Take a lesson on locally roasted coffee.  Enjoy some Florida whiskey tasting courtesy of the Palm Ridge Distillery.  Find out how to eat sustainably as well as the multitude of benefits that supporting your local agricultural industry provides.  Visit the Homebrew Competition and Cocktail Contest.  Finish off with a screening of “Eat Drink Man Woman” by Director Ang Lee.

Tasting is strongly encouraged at the Jacksonville GastroFest 2015.  Taste tickets are $1 each and each tasting can cost anywhere between one and three taste tickets.  If you are looking for a deal, try the Four Star or Five Star Passes.  With the Four Star Pass ($45), you can taste as much as you want from as many tasting vendors as you want all day long (tasting vendors will change throughout the day).  You will also receive VIP bathroom access (definitely worth the price of admission).  The Five Star Pass ($85) gets you everything the Four Star Pass offers as well as access to all alcohol vendors and a grab bag that includes a souvenir mug that you can use for your tastings.  You can purchase your tickets online at the GastroFest website here.  Passes are limited.  If you purchase your passes at the gate, you will receive $5 off as long as you take the Skyway back and forth to the venue.

Bring the family out for a day of foodie fun.  Come to Hemming Park on Saturday, March 21st for the Jacksonville GastroFest 2015.  Remember, though, that you must be 21 or older to purchase and consume alcohol.  Bring a valid photo ID or you will be turned away from alcohol tastings.  Bon appetit!
