Don't miss your opportunity to catch beautifully decorated canoes compete in the 2015 Jacksonville Dragon Boat Festival on the St John's River.Have you ever heard of a “dragon boat”?  These are traditional Chinese canoes that are designed and decorated to look like a dragon.  They are amazing!  If you’ve never seen them in action, you definitely need to make plans to come to the 2015 Jacksonville Dragon Boat Festival this weekend.  It’s tons of fun.

Click here to search our featured Jacksonville/St Augustine homes for saleThe 2015 Jacksonville Dragon Boat Festival marks the third year that this unique event has taken place at Jacksonville Landing.  More than 50 different teams will be competing in the races along the St John’s River.  Local businesses, corporations and organizations will all have teams racing the 400 meter length of waterway.  Watch local police officers and firefighters go head to head in the competition.  Cheer on your favorite teams to victory.

The 2015 Jacksonville Dragon Boat Festival is just the latest celebration in the ever-expanding water sport known as dragon boat racing.  This sport has fans and participants in more than 80 countries around the world.  When I say you need to see this, I mean you NEED to see this.

It won’t cost you a dime to cheer on the teams at the 2015 Jacksonville Dragon Boat Festival.  In between races, watch Chinese dancers perform.  Martial artists will also demonstrate their skills.  Live musical entertainment will be featured on center stage.

All proceeds from the 2015 Jacksonville Dragon Boat Festival will benefit In the Pink.  Jacksonville-based In the Pink provides assistance and support services to men, women and children with cancer.  They also provide much-needed products to make life a little easier during treatment.

Jacksonville Honors Sept 11th Throughout the City

Jacksonville honors Sept 11th with several ceremonies throughout the city of Friday. Pay tribute to those we lost on 9/11 with your friends & neighbors.Tomorrow is the 14th anniversary of 9/11.  It seems just like yesterday that our nation sat in horror watching as the events of that day unfolded.  It has forever changed how we operate in this country and our Jacksonville community.  This Friday, Jacksonville Honors Sept 11th throughout the city with several different ceremonies.

Jacksonville Honors Sept 11th

What: 9/11 Memorial Mass
Where: St Paul’s Riverside Catholic Church (2609 Park St)
When: Sept 11th 9am

Start off the day with a mass in honor of those we lost on 9/11.  After the mass is over, everyone is welcome to join the procession to nearby Riverside Memorial Park.  Firefighters, their families, students and Frs Difazio and Reynolds will be placing a wreath on the river.

A wreath will be placed in honor of Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, both Navy SEALs, and Information Officer Sean Smith.  These brave men died in the attacks in Benghazi three years ago.  Life Song will be performing inspirational music.  The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association will also be on hand to participate in the ceremony.

Jacksonville honors Sept 11th into the evening with the 9/11 Peace Concert at St John’s Cathedral.  Choirs, choruses and chamber singers from local Jacksonville area schools and organizations will be performing throughout the evening.  The Jacksonville Sister Cities Association will host a special reception in Tolliver Hall following the concert.

Jason Nettle from Jacksonville honors Sept 11th with his one-man play.  Come watch as Jason tells the story of how 9/11 effected the lives of 17 New Yorkers.  Caution: strong language and descriptions of violence.

While Jacksonville honors Sept 11th with their ceremonies, services and shows, St Augustine offers its own “Ceremony of Remembrance”.  Mayor Nancy Shaver and several fire officials from St Augustine and St Johns County will say a few words in memorium of those we lost on 9/11.  A moment of silence is scheduled around 8:45am followed by the ringing of the historic 1900 fire bell.  The bell will toll 14 times…once for each year that has passed since September 11th, 2001.

The Lewis-Smith Mortuary plays host on the 4th Sat of the month through Oct.Did I really say 2015 Jacksonville Family Fun Day at the Mortuary?  Yes, the Lewis-Smith Mortuary to be exact.  Death doesn’t have to be scary.  It is a natural process.  We are born.  We live.  We die.  It is something that happens to everyone.  On the fourth Saturday of every month, the Lewis-Smith Mortuary transforms into a Jacksonville community gathering place with a fun, carnival-like atmosphere.

Come watch as Jacksonville Landing plays One Musical Note this Saturday to help raise money for and awareness of diseases that affect men, women and kids.Jacksonville Landing Plays One Musical Note for a cure this Saturday, August 1st.  Musicians for a Cure and the National Pink Tie Organization offers up One Musical Note, a concert to help raise awareness of several different diseases.  Musicians from all over our Jacksonville community will be playing a free concert just for you!

The goal of the National Pink Tie Organization is to help raise awareness for all types of diseases, including cancer, lymes disease, lupus and more.  They know that finding cures for these diseases costs money.  That is why they do fundraising events like this.  When Jacksonville Landing plays One Musical Note, funds raised will go towards research and support groups.

Organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Dreams Come True, the Lupus Foundation and In the Pink will have information booths set up around the venue.  Early detection is the key to a successful outcome.  Learn about what signs to watch out for and what to do if you suspect you may have an issue.  Representatives from these and other organizations will be speaking in between the live musical entertainment.

The 2015 Jacksonville Community Awareness Expo lives up to its Circus theme with face painting, balloon making and tons of family-friendly activities.The 2015 Jacksonville Community Awareness Expo is this Saturday, July 18th.  Celebrate our Jacksonville community and all the families that reside here.  It promises to be a day of fun for all ages to enjoy!

2015 Jacksonville Community Awareness Expo

Click here to search our featured Jacksonville/St Augustine homes for saleThe theme for the 2015 Jacksonville Community Awareness Expo is “Circus”.  And oh what a great time it sounds like it will be!  The Jacksonville Ice and Sports Complex will host this second annual event.  Community awareness is also family awareness.  That is why this event focuses on both.  Get your face painted.  The Gator Clowns will be on-site showing off their balloon making skills to the kids.  Make a tutu for your little one (or yourself).

Shop at any one of the dozens of vendors at the 2015 Jacksonville Community Awareness Expo.  Learn more about different organizations set up to help the Jacksonville community.  The Kids Zone includes bounce houses.  Live entertainment is scheduled throughout the day  Can you keep a secret?  I have it on good authority that Mickey, Minnie and even Iron Man will be stopping by to make an appearance.

Do you like basketball?  Sign yourself and two buddies up for the 3×3 Basketball Competition.  The competition is divided up into seven different divisions.  The Kiddie Co-Ed is for kids ages 10 and under.  Boys and girls ages 11 to 14 will compete separately.  Older boys and girls (ages 15 to 18) will also compete separately.  There will then be a separate women’s division and men’s division for ages 19 and above.  If you are interested, you need to register now.  Competition is limited to just 10 teams per division.  The Kiddie Co-Ed and Youth Girls ages 15-18 are already full.

Jacksonville Landing also offers up some 2015 Jacksonville July 4th fun.  Enjoy a live musical concert by X Hale from 3pm to 8pm.  Follow that up with the Ivey West Band from 8pm to 1am.

Friendship Fountain Park offers tons of hands-on activities at the Museum of Science and History before the big show over the St Johns River.

Just a 45 minute drive south is Green Cove Springs.  That is where you’ll find the American Pie 4th of July festivities.  Enjoy music, pony and train rides, slip and slides and more.  The car show runs from 10am to 2pm.  Food vendors will be more than happy to keep your tummies full.  Fireworks start at 9:30pm.  Pets are welcome.  Proceeds benefit various Clay County charities.

As you can see, there are tons of things to do for your 2015 Jacksonville July 4th fun in the sun this Saturday.  Always remember to be safe.  The loud sounds of the fireworks can scare even the tamest of animals.  It might be a good idea to keep your pets at home.  If you do bring them out, make sure they are on a leash for their safety and the safety of others.
